Frequently Asked Questions
What is Big Walk? #
Big Walk is a videogame about talking to your friends. It is both a big adventure, and a nice place to hang out.
When will Big Walk release? #
As of August 4th, 2026, Big Walk is now out. Enjoy.
Where can I play Big Walk? #
It’s available for Windows and Mac (via Steam and the Mac App Store), PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2. No other platforms are planned at this time.
Players
How many people can play? #
Two or more players, with a maximum of 12.
Does the game work differently with different numbers of players? #
A little bit, yes. Each time the host starts a session, they choose a 2 player, 3 player or 4+ player version of the world. Some things in the world change to adapt to each of these choices.
What if not everyone can play the whole session? #
Think of this setting as the minimum number of players who will be participating, rather than the maximum. If some players won’t be joining for your whole session, it might be better to pick a lower number.
What’s the ideal number of players? #
Any number in that range is good! We didn’t make the game with a specific number of players in mind.
With fewer players the game is a more focused co-op experience. Once you get closer to 12 it’s more of a fun, chaotic mess. But it’ll be good no matter how many people you’re playing with.
Is there a single-player mode? #
No, sorry. Big Walk is entirely about teamwork and talking. Everything you do in the game is designed for cooperative multiplayer. (You could start a game and walk around a little bit as a single player, but you won’t get very far.)
Will there be online matchmaking? #
No.
Big Walk is a long-form cooperative game. It’s made to be played with the same group over multiple sessions, so it doesn’t make sense to throw strangers together randomly. We think it’s a much better experience to organize and play Big Walk with people you know — or people you want to know better.
Can people on different systems play together? #
Sure! Big Walk has crossplay support, so players on different systems can play together.
Playing the Game
Can I use a mouse and keyboard? A game controller? #
Both will work well.
The computer version of the game supports most game controllers. And we even support the mouse mode of the Nintendo Switch 2.
Can I rebind my controls? #
Yes. Check Settings > Rebinding.
Do I need to save my progress? #
The game host saves your progress automatically.
How does hosting work? #
A Big Walk host is the keeper of the save game and all of your progress. So, the host of your group will need to start playing first.
Once a host starts a session, the other players can then connect to it. When the host stops the session, all other players will be disconnected. If you want to continue your journey later where you left off last time, you’ll need your host to host again!
How do I connect to my friend’s game? #
- If you your friend is on your friends list on the platform you’re on — like Steam, or a console — your friend’s host game should automatically appear in a menu of active friend games.
- If you aren’t friends on a friends list, you can join anyone with a Join Code. A Join Code is a short, unique code that is generated every time the host starts a session. Your host can then share the code with you so you can join.
(Note that the Mac App Store version of the game does not support Game Center, so you’ll have to use a Join Code.)
Does Big Walk have an “ending”? #
Yes! Big Walk is a hand-crafted cooperative adventure meant to be played start-to-finish with a group of friends. It has a beginning, a middle, and an end. That said, it’s also a nice place to hang out, and you can jump in any time you feel like taking a big walk for its own sake.
As a host, how can I find my join code? #
Your unique join code is displayed in the corner of the host menu before you start your game. Once a game has started, open the in-game menu and go to “Session Details” to find your join code.
Can I change the password while the game is running? #
Yes. Open the in-game menu, and choose “Session Details” to change your game’s password.
Do all players need to have the same version number? #
A Big Walk version number is made of three numbers, for example, 1.2.3. Only the first two numbers need to match for players to be able to play together. Don’t worry if the third number is different.
Can Big Walk help with my first-person-game motion sickness? #
Hopefully. First, you should try one of our unique “Motion Reduction Overlays”, which you can turn on in Settings > General. This will add an overlay that may help you feel more grounded, and less motion sick.
Second, you can try adjusting your “Field of View” (FOV) in Settings > Graphics. A higher number allows you to see more of the world, which may make you feel less claustrophobic, and less motion sick.
What accessibility features does Big Walk have? #
Big Walk allows you to:
- Skip any challenge
- Rebind all controls
- Choose from multiple crosshair styles
- Choose between “Hold” or “Toggle” for some controls
- Adjust the FOV
- Select from various Motion Reduction overlays
Plus, some items in the game can improve accessibility, such as highlighting interactive items. Finally, characters are able to pick up and carry each other when needed.
Want an accessibility feature beyond those described above? Please let us know!
How does challenge skipping work? #
Certain challenges in Big Walk require particular abilities to complete, including the ability to hear/read, speak/type, react quickly, or use fine motor skills. Big Walk has an in-game setting that can allow you to skip any challenge that might otherwise be inaccessible to you.
To enable challenge skipping, the host should use the accessibility menu when starting a session.
In-Game Chat
How do I talk to people in Big Walk? #
Big Walk is designed to use in-game voice chat and in-game text chat. Feel free to use either, or a mixture of voice and text chat, in whatever way works best for you.
Can I play without using a microphone? #
Yes! Big Walk’s in-game text chat system has the same features (and intentional limitations) as the in-game voice chat. You can play the whole game that way without missing out.
For example, your text chat won’t be readable when you are far away, or on opposite sides of soundproof glass! And your text chat will work with in-game items like walkie talkies.
Can I talk to other players in ways separate to the in-game chat (like using other programs)? #
NO WAY. Talking to players outside the game is ❌ NOT ALLOWED ❌
(We also strongly suggested not playing in the same physical room as other players, so you won’t hear each other in-person.)
Wait, why can’t I talk to people in a separate chat? #
Big Walk gives you fun challenges and situations that can enable or restrict your talking in different, and interesting, ways. For example, you might find yourself in a situation where you can’t hear each other, and you need to find other ways to communicate. That’s only possible with the built-in, in-game voice chat.
We know that in some games, in-game chat is totally optional, and the game is still fun without using it. But in Big Walk, voice chat is the key to making the game fun!
What will happen if I talk outside the game anyway? #
If you decide to cheat and talk outside the game, the game won’t stop running or punish you, but you’ll miss out on the most interesting parts of the game. Also, parts of the game won’t really make sense, and it might even become a bit boring! It’d be like playing charades but everybody gets to talk.
Trust us — talking in-game is what makes Big Walk special.
Can I play with my friends in the same house/apartment/space? #
Maybe! It won’t work if you’re all in the same room, since you’ll hear each other outside of voice chat. But! If you have multiple devices and multiple rooms, you can absolutely play together with people in separate rooms, since everyone’s voice chat will remain isolated from other players. In-game communication is very important!
Troubleshooting
My friend’s game isn’t showing up in the list. #
- First add them as a “Friend” on the service you’re using.
- Here’s instructions for: Steam, PlayStation, or Nintendo Switch Online.
- The Mac App Store version Big Walk will not show a friend’s games list.
- Or, just get the “Join Code” from your friend and use that instead.
I can’t connect to my friend’s game. #
- Make sure the host has a game up and running, with their character loaded into the world before you try to join.
- Make sure sure the host don’t have any connection warnings displayed in the bottom left of their screen.
- Check your device has a working internet connection.
- If you are still unable to join, try completely closing Big Walk and opening it again.
- If you are still unable to join, ask the host to completely close the game as well.
I can’t hear the game audio. #
- Check if other apps or sites like YouTube are playing audio OK.
- Go to Settings > Audio in Big Walk make sure “Volume” is turned up
If it’s still a problem, let us know!
The game audio is cutting in and out. #
It might be that your computer is struggling to run the game properly. Try following these steps.
Other players can’t hear my voice. #
Open Settings > Audio, and check if the “Microphone Activity” is bouncing when you talk. If not:
- See if your mic is working in another programs.
- Make sure your microphone is properly plugged in fully. Hey, it happens.
- Also make sure your microphone or headset isn’t muted on the device itself. Check your mute switch. Lower your boom mic.
- Check if you have Settings > Audio > Mute Mode set to “hold”. If so, you will need to hold the button to talk.
- Make sure no one is “silenced” in the moderation menu.
Other players sound quiet to me. #
You might need to make sure that everyone’s input volume is adjusted at a system level - ie in your device’s settings. Another easy fix is to make sure everyone’s microphone is close enough to their mouth.
KNOWN ISSUE: We understand that some people are having a problem where their friends’ voices are too quiet in the game. Sorry about this! While Big Walk is built around players getting quieter when they are farther away, we can see that for some setups, players’ voices are much quieter than intended even when very close by. We’re working to put out a fix as soon as we can.
Voices sound doubled, or there’s weird voice echo. #
Someone likely has a feedback loop going, which means the microphone is picking up voices from a speaker.
- Find out which player is causing the doubling. Each player could take turns muting themselves using the mute button and you can see when the doubling stops.
- If it’s you, try muting yourself when you aren’t talking.
- Consider switching to headphones if you’re not using them.
Big Walk is running slowly on my computer. #
If your framerate or FPS is bad, it could be graphic settings. Every computer is different, of course, but here’s one way to optimize Big Walk:
- Go to Settings > Graphics and lowering your “Render Scale”. This reduces the GPU load.
- Then, go to Settings > Graphics and lower the “Quality” setting. This lowers the CPU & GPU load.
- Finally, try increasing “Render Scale” back up gradually.
This will help balance your CPU with your GPU, and should improve performance and make Big Walk run smoother on your computer.
My game controller or gamepad isn’t working. #
Hmm. Try the following:
- Visit a controller testing website like https://controllertest.io
- Disconnect other peripherials to make sure none are conflicting with your controller
Voice chat isn’t working on PlayStation 5. #
On PS5 there is a setting that mutes all voice chat. Turn it off by pressing the PS Button > Sound (speaker icon) > Mute Game Voice Chat
Some parts of the Big Walk world seem broken. #
If something seems not quite right — like, for example, the ocean is missing — make sure you’ve updated your system to the latest graphics drivers.
Other players are moving erratically. #
If characters are jittery or laggy or skipping around, this is likely a networking/bandwidth issue — something is interfering with the game’s network connection.
- Quit other network-heavy programs, or shutdown devices on your network that could be using heavy internet.
- Move closer to your wireless router to increase speed.
- If you can, go wired, and connect your computer via ethernet.
Some other thoughts:
- A low graphics framerate, or the host having a low graphics framerate, can cause network issues.
- If all players on a game are experiencing network issues, it may be that the host is having network troubles.
- So, make sure the player who is hosting is running the game at a reasonable framerate. You could try asking the host to lower their quality settings, or getting a different player to host.
Other players’ voices are dropping in and out. #
This is likely caused by networking issues. See Other players are moving erratically for more information.
